At Blackburn The Redeemer, we use Essential Letters and Sounds.

ELS Spelling in Year 2

In Year 2, the children progress onto use ELS Spelling. This revises and builds on the code that the children already know by looking at grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPC’s) they have already been taught in Reception and Year One. It allows children to build upon their understanding of the sounds they have previously been taught as part of their phonics programme and gives them the confidence to use this code to support spelling. It emphasises the importance of reading to underpin spelling and gives children opportunities to read within each spelling lesson.
