Tag Rugby

Our tag rugby team once again showed their class in the BWD tag rugby competition. They played a total of 8 games and comfortably won each one. They went on to represent the authority at Preston Grasshoppers in the Lancashire finals. The finals were of extremely high standard and the team did us proud by finishing in 4th place.


A group of twelve year 6 children represented the school in this year’s competition. Over 20 schools entered meaning a total of two hundred and forty children. The team did exceptionally well with all twelve children finishing in the top eighteen. This lead to us comfortably wining the competition and attending the Lancashire Youth Games finals in July to represent the authority.


Our netball team had an amazing season. They took part in the Blackburn Rovers Central Venue League which ran over 4 months, missing out on top spot by goal difference. They then took part in the Blackburn with Darwen competition, going through the whole competition undefeated and being announced the overall winners progressing to the Lancashire Youth Games Finals

Tri Golf

This was only the 2nd time we had been able to enter the Year 3 and 4 Tri Golf competition. Once again our children did us proud. They won the competition and progressed to the Lancashire Youth Games finals in July.


After holding a number of inter school tennis competitions, a team of 4 children represented us at the Blackburn with Darwen competition. They progressed to the final where they came up against very tough opposition. The match finished as a draw and was then decided by points scored, which resulted in us being crowned champions!


This year saw our best return of medals at the swimming gala. We gained medals in the following; girls breaststroke, boys breaststroke, girls medley relay, boys medley relay, mixed cannon relay, and boys front crawl. We also gained 1st place in both boys butterfly and boys individual medley.

Cross Country

This was held over three evenings with points being accumulated for an end of year presentation. As a whole school we finished in 3rd place, our girls team finished in 3rd place and our boys team finished in 2nd place. There were also individual winners and one of our boys, who finished in 1st place in all three events, was eventually crowned the overall winner in Blackburn.


Another super season for our boys and girls football team. The girls finished 2nd place in the Blackburn and Darwen Competition. In the league the girls also just missed out on top spot by 2 points, a fantastic effort from all involved, losing just one game all season. The boys league was re constructed this year, with teams being seeded and placed leagues ranging from league 1 to league 1. Our team was placed in the top league. The lads gave an excellent account of themselves finishing in 3rd place, losing only 2 games all season. The boys also took part in the Blackburn Rovers Central Venue League. We entered two teams into this competition and both showed excellent team work and sportsmanship. They finished in 1st and 2nd place! Blackburn Rovers also invited teams down to play on Ewood Park at the end of the season for a Champions final. Our A team showed their class by winning each game they played and were the Overall Champions, lifting the cup at Ewood Park.

Our Year 3/4 team entered two festivals this year, they showed great promise and had a fantastic time representing the school.


We entered the KS1 curling competition. a great time was had by all with some great attacking shots being played. They progressed to the finals, were they were eventually beaten and finished as runners up. This was the children first time representing school and they did fantastic!


Our Year 6 cricket team produced some fantastic displays to reach the Blackburn with Darwen cricket finals. After fielding first they were set a mammoth task of reaching 289 runs. They gave it a valiant effort before ending the game on 267. This was the school best ever finish in the cricket competition.

Sportshall Athletics

We entered the all three competitions, Year 3/4, Year 5/6 and the year 1/2. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the competitions taking part in various running, jumping and throwing events.

Lancashire Youth Games

We had three teams representing the authority at the years Lancashire Youths Games. Year 3/4 Golf team who did exceptionally well n very wet conditions. Our Netball team who played some super netball and reached the quarter-final stage and our Orienteering team who finished in an outstanding 2nd place in the whole of Lancashire!

It has been another successful year for sport at The Redeemer CEP.

Underneath is a brief overview of the highlights.


We had our most successful Swimming Gala ever in March. We had multiple podium finishes and two first places in the boy’s 100m Individual Medley and the 100m Butterfly.  We were ranked in the top 3 schools overall.


The orienteering team were victorious in the BWD competition and will go on to represent Blackburn with Darwen at the Lancashire Youth Games in Blackpool in July.

Football (boys)

The football team came in third place overall in the BRIC league, and finished runners up in the Darwen Rangers competition held in June at DACA. They are also in a strong position in the BWD outdoor league with 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat.

Football (girls)

The girls were knocked out in the group stages of the Jubilee Shield but were victorious in the BRIC competition in the Spring term.


The netball team have had an extremely busy year. They have achieved some fantastic results in the BRIC indoor league and reached the finals of the BWD High Five’s competition.

A mile a day

Year 6 have been running a mile each day since SATs as part our Health and Wellbeing focus in school. The pupils have achieved some brilliant times and shown great enthusiasm and commitment.

Sports News June 2014-2015 – Spring/Summer Term

Tag Rugby – Oct 2014

Our Tag rugby team did us proud as usual at this year BWD Tag Rugby competition. They won every game and won the competition for the 4th year running. They will now represent BWD at the Lancashire Youth game on June 30th in Blackpool.

Cross Country – (Oct2014 – March 2015)

This was held over 3 nights, all the children did fantastically well and showed great determination to improve their positions in each race. In the Girls event w e finished in 3rd place, in the boys event we finished in 3rd place and in the combined whole school event we finished in 3rd place too!

Key stage 1 Athletics –  Jan 2015

We took a group of children to a KS1 Sports hall Athletics competition. This was their first time representing our school at a sporting event. They did the school proud and finished in 4th Place.

LKS2 Athletics  – Jan 2015

A group of children represented our school at the year 3 and 4 sports hall athletics competition. They each took part in a running, jumping and throwing event. After 2 hours of competing it was announced they finished in 4th place.

Key stage 2 Athletics – Jan 2015

Our KS2 Athletics team put in a great performance at their qualifying night, unfortunately they finished in 2nd place with only the winning school progressing to final night.

Gymnastics – Feb 2015

A group of 6 children took part in this year BWD gymnastics competition. The children had to do a vault, complete a floor routine and a body management routine. After 4 hours of competition we were announce at 4th place as a whole school. One of our girls finished in 2nd place individually and will now represent BWD in the Lancashire Youth Games in Blackpool on June 30th.

Girls Football – March 2015

Our girl’s team entered the BWD girl’s football competition at St Bedes. They played great football and won each of the group games comfortably. In the semi finals they met Lower Darwen, there was no separating the two teams during normal time so extra time was required. They went on to beat Lower Darwen 2-1 in extra time. In the final they met St Paul’s, the girls had a faultless display and came out comfortable winners, Retaining they title from last year, they will now represent BWD at the Lancashire Youth Games in Blackpool on 30th June.

Orienteering – March 2015

The team did extremely well and showed off their excellent map reading skills. One of our group of children finished in the top 3 timed events. As a school team we finished in joint 2nd place.

B& C Football Team competition – March 2015

Our B & C Teams took part in a football competition at St Bedes. This was a great competition and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The team topped their groups and ended up meeting each other in the semi finals. The B team came out on top and progressed to the final. This went to a penalty shoot out which they unfortunately got beat 3-1

Darwen Rangers Football Competitions –  April 2015

Both the boy’s team and girls team did extremely well. Both qualified for the semi finals, both wining and progressing to the finals. Our boy’s team lost out to Lower Darwen and finished in 2nd place. Our girl’s teams came out Champions for the 2nd year running.

Swimming gala. – April 2015

A great night was had by our team, reaching the finals in every event. One of our swimmers managed to win a medal, a bronze medal in girls 25m butterfly.

Year 3/4 Tennis – April 2015

The team did fantastically well. They won each of their group games and qualified for the semi finals. In the semis they won a hard fought match against St Paul’s, progressing to the final to play St Cuthbert’s. In the final the two teams were unable to be separated by point difference, meaning the game was decided by points scored, unfortunately we finished 5 points behind St Cuthbert’s meaning a 2nd place finish.

Cycling Competition –  April 2015

A group of 4 children from year 6 were selected to represent the school in a cycling competition at Steve Burke cycle centre in Pendle. The children took part in a team sprint, individual sprint and various skill based challenges. The team finished in 3rd place

Sport School of the Year – April

For the 2nd year running our school was nominated for Blackburn Sport School of the Year. After the disappointment of finishing runner up last year we are pleased and proud to announce that we were crowned this year’s winners! The judges were impressed with the number of competitions the school enters as well as the high level of success rate Another  pleasing point was also the variety of sport the school offers and how every child has the opportunity to trial for the teams.

The award now leads us forward to the Lancashire Sports School of the year with the winner being announced later this Year

Year 6 Tennis – May 2015

A group of 2 boys and 2 girls represented the school in a tennis competition. The standard on display from our team was fanatic. They reached the finals after wining every game in the group stages. We were narrowly defeated 3-1 in the final

Boys football  – Ongoing

Our team has played 3 league matches so far and has 4 points. We are currently joint top with 5 games left to play, fingers crossed we can retain our title

Sports News 2014

Sports News June 2014 – Spring/Summer Term

The boys football team remain in the running for the league championship with a few games remaining. They beat St. James’ Lower Darwen 8-1, Lower Darwen 1-0 and also drew 1-1 with Lower Darwen at home before a narrow 1-0 defeat to Audley Juniors.
The girls football team drew their first league match 2-2 with Feniscowles CP, following up their trophy victories at the Blackburn with Darwen Girls Football Competition and the Darwen Rangers Competition.

The Year 3 and 4 tennis team narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals but gave a fantastic account of themselves at the Year 3 and 4 Mini tennis competition at Blackburn Northern.

The Year 5 orienteering team came a fantastic second place at the Blackburn with Darwen Orienteering Competition at Wittton Park.

Swimming Gala
Lots of the pupils represented the school at the Swimming Gala at Darwen Leisure Centre.

Sports Afternoons
The infant afternoon was a great success, enjoyed by all in sunny and warm weather. The juniors afternoon made a good start but had to be halted mid way through due to torrential rain.

Jubilee Shield

On finals night on the 5th November, the football team narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals. In the first match against St. Paul’s, the team led 1-0 for the majority of the match, but conceded a equaliser with the last kick of the game. The team followed this up with a comfortable 3-0 success against St. James’. In the final game, pre-tournament favourites Salesbury proved too strong and prevailed with a 4-0 success. This led to the team unfortunately missing out on a semi-final spot on goal difference. Well done to the team for a super effort.


The netball team have enjoyed an extremely successful autumn period. They won a friendly tournament held at Feniscowles Primary School and then followed this up by comfortably qualifying for the High 5s Netball Finals night held at QEGS on the 2nd December. The team again performed to a high standard finishing an impressive 5th place. Well done to the team for their hard work and effort in training and matches.


Cross Country

A great team effort on the first of 3 cross country events, big well done to Tom who finished 4th out of over 120 boys and Lauren who finished 5th out of over 125 girls form across Blackburn. Full results to follow.

Fantastic effort by the team, very unfortunate to get beat in the semi finals. Well done team.

Football – Jubilee Shield

The lads did a fantastic job on the qualifying night winning all 3 group matches, finishing top of the league – finals night on 5th November.

Sports Funding

Primary School’s Sports Funding

The government has announced new funding for school sport and PE worth £150m a year for the next two years.

At The Redeemer CEP School we are using our funding to:

  • Release members of staff to organise and coordinate intra-school competitions to encourage 100% participation in sporting activity and run gifted and talented workshops providing pupils with opportunities to excel and develop their skills.
  • Support and develop our teachers to deliver PE with confidence and to improve their skills in a wide range of sports through sourcing specific training.
  • Purchase a new, exciting scheme of work that will ensure progression and learning opportunities.
  • Sign up to the Blackburn with Darwen S.L.A to be able to access a wide variety of inter-school sporting competitions.
  • Hire sports coaches to deliver high-quality after school sports sessions.
  • Develop links with local sports clubs.
  • Provide places for pupils to attend after school sports clubs.
  • Provide extra swimming lessons for children in Year 6 to ensure all children leave The Redeemer being able to swim at least 25 metres.

We recently applied for the Sainsbury’s School Games Kitemark award. This rewards schools for their commitment to and development of competition, school sport and physical education. We were externally validated and were judged to meet the Gold criteria. This is the highest level that can be gained and we are extremely proud of this achievement.

Athletics (Year 5 and 6)

After four weeks, and six rounds of qualifying nights, with a massive 28 primary schools and over 500 pupils competing, the Year 5 and 6 Athletics team came second at 2014 Sportshall Athletics Finals.

A total of eight schools reached the grand final, which this year was held at Darwen Vale High School, after the six qualifying nights in secondary schools across the borough. The competition started in January and schools competed against each other to make the final. Lower Darwen Primary School were crowned champions, edging our team out by the narrowest of margins.

Well done to all the team!

Athletics (Year 3 and 4)

The Year 3 and 4 Athletics team also competed in a borough wide competition, finishing an impressive third place at the finals at Darwen Academy. Many of the pupils were representing the school for the first time and showed lots of endeavour and spirit.

The Year 5 and 6 football team took part in the qualifying round of The Blackburn Rovers Indoor Centre Competition on the 23rd January. They won 3 games and drew 2 games, thereby qualifying from a tough group to take their place in the finals on the 30th January, conceding only 1 goal in the process.

The team also had their first league match on Monday 27th January, away at Audley Primary School. They won a tough game 3-2 to begin the league campaign with 3 points.

Indoor Athletics

The Year 5 and 6 indoor athletics team took part in the qualifying round for the Blackburn Indoor Athletics Competition at Pleckgate High School on the 23rd January. Nine schools were competing for one place at the finals, and the team finished in 1st place. This was a hugely impressive achievement, with the team beating off fierce competition from Shadsworth to take their place at the finals event at Darwen Vale High School on the 29th January. Well done to all 19 pupils!
